A few years ago, I had held a steady job for 2 years at a local business where I had worked my way up to clinic administrator.

 

The owner of the business rarely came to the clinic. But when she did, she was beyond unpleasant. She had a controlling management style that consisted of a “divide and conquer” strategy where she asked employees to secretly “keep tabs” on each other and report back to her.

 

On other occasions, she would ask employees out for drinks, and proceed to get completely drunk and out of control—losing the employees’ respect in the process.

DESPITE ALL THIS...

I continued to “work hard,” doing the “right thing”... and the business kept making money. When times were tough, I kept reminding myself that (thankfully) I had a job that paid the bills and that I was taking care of my family.

 

From time to time, I toyed with the idea of starting a small side business for extra income, but then I would just as quickly find a reason not to.

 

You know, the same reasons we all give? Like:

  • I’m so tired after work.
  • I don’t have the money.
  • My day is so packed already.
  • What would I even do?

Soon, it was spring break, so the kids had no school.

 

I had requested a few days off. I was going to watch my daughter as well as my niece and two nephews since my cousin could not take the entire week off. While I was off, the business owner (my boss) would cover me for about 3 to 4 days.

The Infamous Day Off:

On Thursday (while I was off), I received a call from Jenny - one of the employees at work - who informed me that the owner needed me at work ASAP. I tried to explain that I had the kids all day and would not be able to come in.

 

In the background, I heard the owner yelling—“Tell her I don’t care! I need her ass here by noon!”

 

So I felt I had no choice but to pack the kids some snacks, get them dressed, and drive 45 minutes to work with them.

 

When I got there, I didn’t know how long I was going to be, or what the heck I was walking into, I sat the kids down in the lobby and walked into my office. There I found Jenny sitting in MY chair. She asked me to wait a second as the owner had briefly gone to the bathroom.

When the owner walked in all she said was “Amy, I’m terminating you effective immediately!

 

”My jaw almost dropped! To say I was stunned is an understatement.

 

She went on to ask me, “Do you have the store keys with you?”

I mumbled, “...ummm, yes...” obviously still in shock.

 

She said, “Give them to Jenny and write down your computer password here.”

Still dazed and confused...

...trying to keep it together, I grabbed the family pictures I had on the wall and whatever personal items I had in the desk and slowly walked out.

In the lobby, the kids looked terrified. I remember seeing my daughter with her hands over her ears. When we got to the car, she asked, “Are you ok, Mommy?” and that is what broke me. I couldn’t hold back the tears any longer.

 

Once the kids were situated in the car, I sent my husband a text asking him to call me when he can, and then I started the long drive back home...in silence. That was the most awful drive I ever had.

 

I was hurt. I was angry. I was more angry at myself for believing in the BS myth of “job security.” How can there be security in an occupation that totally depended on my supervisor’s, boss’, or co-worker’s temperament or mood swings? Or how intelligent or ignorant they are?

 

That’s not security! That’s tiptoeing across a frozen lake in the spring.

 

Sooner or later, you’re going to get wet.

 

It was later that evening I vowed to myself:

 

Never Again!

Never again will I put my future or that of my family in someone else’s hands.

SOON AFTER THAT...

I started one of my first business ventures...where I imported materials and created custom pet collars and leashes.

 

I went to local fairs and events—heck, I even had a booth at the local flea market.

 

That booth at the flea market was killing it. I was making anywhere between $500 to $1000 in profits every weekend.

The only downside was that the flea market was only open on Saturdays and Sundays.

 

These cute little things were HOT at the flea market!

 

People were telling their friends and family about them and there was constantly a line at my booth all day long. I was so busy I even hired my cousin and mom to help out.

Because of this success, and the fact that we were limited to 2 days a week, we decided to expand to a place where we could sell all week - the local mall.

When I tell you we went all out, I mean just that.

 We even custom built this kiosk display ourselves

We felt lucky to get a kiosk right outside Macy’s, the main anchor store. We were hoping to get a lot of foot traffic and higher visibility.

The kiosk lease terms required:

  • A 3 month commitment at about $1000 a month
  • We open everyday from 8am to 9pm - no exceptions
  • Our display had to look a certain way
  • We were restricted in how we interacted with the buyers

Despite our excitement and anticipation...basically...it sucked!

 

But that’s not all that sucked. Our sales were also terrible. In the 3 months we were there, guess how many collars we sold?

 

Five.

 

Lemme say that again...

 

FIVE, people!

 

To say I was deflated is an understatement.

 

What’s worse is a few weeks later the sales at the flea market plummeted significantly. It was getting warmer and the “snow birds,” as we call our northern visitors, were going back home after the winter.

 

The seasonal nature of this business as well as the uncertainty was really not ideal. I needed to have a business that had a little more consistency. Something that was not restricted by the location or time.

IT WAS THEN THAT I STARTED LOOKING INTO SELLING ONLINE.

I knew nothing about selling online.

 

So for the first few months I bought courses and guides on how to sell, what to sell etc. Some “taught” (and I use that term loosely) how to import from china, dropshipping, private labeling, thrifting, online and retail arbitrage.

 

I mean I was trying anything.

 

Anyone who knows me will tell you when I commit to something I’m all in. So I honestly gave these courses my all. I followed the steps and the advice of these so called gurus, I asked questions and ended up jaded -- like most of us are –- with these online business courses.

 

I have detailed my horrifying experiences with these types of businesses in my other articles as well as at Overstock Academy.

 

But in summary, those courses were like most other online courses -- vague, full of generalities, and totally useless.

 

It’s like they were meant to confuse the hell out of you so you would eventually blame your inevitable failure on yourself!

Eventually I stumbled on to the Overstock industry.

(And I really mean stumbled! But that’s another long story I’ll have to share with you in the future, or we’ll be here all day!)

 

This led me to starting an online business in my garage with 5-figure monthly sales that I recently sold for a high 6-figure amount.

When I started the online overstock business, once again I looked for resources in the industry. I joined Facebook groups, online forums, bought more useless guides. In the end I realized that I had to toss all the “rules” out the window and go it alone.

 

I found that once again, the “gurus” in these groups, and forum leaders really have no experience doing this.

I mean think about it...

If they were so good at the business ideas they sell you, why are they not doing it themselves?

And don’t let them tell you that they are successful at it.

 

Ask yourself this...

You have the same 24hrs a day that I have right?

So if you can’t find enough time in the day to take care of your kids, walk the dog, go to the grocery store, oil change, clean your car etc... All while running your kickass online business -- where do they get the time to do all that plus be on Facebook or online forums supporting you when you need help?!

 

And don’t buy that “I’ve got a team” BS!

 

The simple answer is this... they can’t.

 

There is no way they have a successful online business practicing what they are preaching and at the same time run these groups. Make no mistake, they are definitely making money -- just not in the way you think.

How can you tell?

Do what I did. Get stuck... and ask a practical question. See how many times the “guru” actually gives you an useful answer.

 

If you’re lucky you’ll get a vague answer. Why? Because they don’t actually know what the heck you are talking about!

 

They’re all talk. They’ve never actually done it!

 

Most times it’s the other members that will answer your question. So then you ask yourself. Is that why I paid for this course? Is that why I joined this Facebook Group or forum?

 

Some of the other members are knowledgeable, but for the most part, it’s like the blind leading the blind!

 

Tell me, how the hell are you supposed to grow when you are learning from someone who is in the same barely-floating boat that you are on?

SO, MY FRIEND, ONCE I REALIZED WHAT WAS GOING ON, I WAS OUT!

 

I leaped out of that boat.

 

I was willing to sink or swim.

I’m still a member of some of these forums and Facebook groups. Since I recently sold my business, I have had a little bit more time on my hands. So I decided to check into these groups to see what’s up.

 

To my surprise, I quickly realized 3 things.

  1. Most of the same know-it-alls are still there giving useless advice, making the same amounts of money they made 6 to 7 years ago. While some went out of business all together.
  2. The gurus selling these programs still give vague and crappy responses.
  3. People still faced the same problems I that I once faced (the ones that I overcame, to create and sell my profitable business)

 

I was watching them getting these answers and responses that were flat out wrong. In fact most of the advice they were getting would eventually put them out of business!

 

I couldn’t take anymore. I decided to jump in and help.

It didn’t take long for me to realize that I was mostly answering the same questions over and over again.

That was when I decided to create some guides that I could quickly and easily share.

Lately, I’ve seen a ton of YouTube videos with weekend warriors glorifying their local sales. They buy overstock products, take pictures, and sell them locally on these apps.

 

I’ve been there, done that. I can tell you that method is totally unsustainable. I don’t care how much fun they seem to be having. Believe me, after a few months it gets old and you wonder why you aren’t growing as fast as you once dreamed you would.

  • Over 1 billion people worldwide are using the Internet today. Compare this number with the population of a city such as Miami, Florida. The population estimate is around 420,000 people. With a store located in Miami, your potential population reach will not rise far above this number.
  • 51% of shopping is done online today, and the numbers keep climbing dramatically each year!

 

4. Measured Results With Online Marketing

  • Reach more and more qualified customers
  • Flag people down even more easily than before -- forget standing on a corner or hollering in a flea market
  • Online marketing results can be measured and changes can be made based on your results
  • Easy testing, creating, and tweaking sales on your store

  • My experience was that the most popular time to shop online is 12pm to 2pm weekdays, and on Sunday evenings.

  • If you have a name brand product that a buyer is already looking for, your only job is to offer them a great price, more immediate availability, or some other kind of convenience that other sellers don’t offer!
